What does this mean for you as a CVCC Nurse?
It means career diversity, professional cross-training, a supportive and cohesive team, and dynamic, interesting cases.
The Cardiovascular Critical Care Unit (CVCC) is a very specialized cardiology medicine and cardiothoracic surgery inpatient intensive care unit that is experiencing extensive growth. Our CVCC nurses receive advanced training to care for a wide variety of acute cardiac patients, including cardiogenic shock, advanced heart failure, complicated STEMIs, cardiac arrests, unstable electrophysiology conditions, and immediate post-operative cardiothoracic surgery care. Our nurses also go through specific education on various cardiac assist devices, including Impellas, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps (IABP), and Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The CVCC nursing team thrives on teamwork and collaboration with our highly skilled physician partners and is an incredible place to learn, grow, and develop cardiac-specific critical care nursing skills while being part of an incredibly supportive care environment.
We are a rapidly growing cardiovascular medicine and cardiac surgical team that cares for a wide variety of patients with underlying cardiac issues. We perform well over 600 open-heart cases a year and have the best outcomes for myocardial infarctions in all of New England. We have a very dynamic team that prides itself on teamwork and collaboration. We are supportive of nurses at all levels and have created a Heart and Vascular-specific orientation to help support nurses in gaining the skill set to be successful in the progressive care and critical care cardiac environment. Previous experience in cardiology, cardiac surgery, progressive care or critical care is not required to be successful on one of our teams in the HVU or CVCC! The nurse that will be successful working on HVU & CVCC is one that possesses strong interpersonal skills, has a desire to continuously learn, thrives working in a fast-paced, challenging environment and has a passion for cardiac medicine and surgery.
Qualifications for a CVCC nurse:
- Graduate from an accredited Nursing Program required.
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) with 1 year of experience.
- Associate Degree (ADN) prepared nurses with 2 years' experience.
All Associate Degree (ADN) prepared nurses must commit to completing a BSN or higher nursing degree within 10 years of their hire date.
Are you wondering if you can make the transition to cardiac nursing without prior cardiac experience? The answer is YES.
Nurses can absolutely work and learn in the Cardiovascular Critical Care Unit (CVCC). Part of the onboarding process for all RNs is participating in progressive and critical care classes. This allows you to come off orientation with the skills necessary to care for any level of care provided on the unit. All RNs on the CVCC need ACLS certification; however, this can be obtained after hire if a nurse does not already hold this certification. Additionally, we encourage and support our RNs to obtain additional certifications, including CCRN certification for nurses in our cardiology critical care unit (CVCC).
